In this myth, the god Hades does not behave the he ordinarily does. Moved by Orpheus’s beautiful music, Hades has a slight change in heart. In “Orpheus, the Great Musician,” Hades reveals a nicer and warmer side to his normally stern and dark personality. Hades shows a kinder side when he allows a possible second chance for Eurydice, Orpheus's love, to live again and be with Orpheus. However, Orpheus’s has to follow the directions of Hades in order to let Eurydice live again. This behavior from Hades is quite surprising, because Hades usually does not give second chances. He is a strict person and he does not allow the dead, who are living in the Underworld, to live again. Based on other Greek myths, Hades is usually quite mean, and strict. In other myths, he develops a cruel and selfish personality. …show more content…
This is how Hades is usually. He is cruel and selfish. This makes it quite surprising when Hades gives a possible second chance for Eurydice to live again. Another reason that makes it quite surprising for Hades to reveal a kinder side to his personality is the setting and mood of the Underworld. Hades lives in the Underworld, a gloomy, lonely, and dark place. It can also be inferred that the Underworld was filled with many hardships, because in the story it was described that Orpheus faced many troubles and hardships as he tried to make his way back to the upper world. This gloomy setting and mood developed in the story, makes it more likely for someone living there to be cruel and mean, especially Hades, the ruler of the Underworld. This makes it quite surprising for Hades to act nicer and show some sympathy to Orpheus since the setting develops gloomy mood. In conclusion, these are two reasons why Hades kinder behavior in “Orpheus, the Great Musician” was quite surprising and
