Kino was very distraught that they would cheat him out of his fortune and decided that the next day they would travel to the capital. Kino and Juana went back to their house and Kino again hid the pearl. This time he hid the pearl in the fireplace. In the middle of the night Kino woke when he felt Juana get up from her sleeping mat. He saw her go to the fireplace and she dug up the pearl. She headed down to the beach and was going to throw the pearl back in the sea. She thought by throwing it back in the sea she would get her old life back. Kino followed her and before she had a chance to throw it in the sea he caught her hand. Kino grabbed the pearl from her and punched her in the face and kicked her in the side. Kino then started back up the path toward the brush house when he was attacked. Kino grabbed his knife and struck the attacker. He was then swept off his feet and somebody went through his pockets to find the pearl. The pearl flew out of his hand when he hit the ground. Juana came up the path and found Kino and the dead man. She found the pearl on the path and gave it back to Kino. Kino and Juana decided it was best if they leave and go somewhere else. Kino went to the canoe and Juana went to retrieve Coyotito from the brush house. Kino
