“ It wasn’t often the scorpions took on new players especially fourteen-year-olds and this was the chance of a lifetime for Greg. He hadn’t been able to play high school ball, which he really wanted to do, but playing for the community team was the next best thing” (Myers, 17). This shows that, Greg thinks that basketball is very important to him because he doesn’t have a lot of chances to play. This also shows, how this might be Greg’s last chance to play ball which means that he wants it more. “The pearl has become my soul” (Steinbeck, 67). This points out that, the pearl is so important to Kino that he believes that he is defined by it. This also points out that, the pearl has become part of him thus making it very important to him. To conclude, Kino and Greg believe that they know what is important in life, but their stories will take a turn in a different direction

The reason why it was my favorite was because it shows us how something that costs nothing and looks bad could be so valuable to someone and how it means something important to one. The genre of this story is short story. The charters in the story are Lemon Brown, Greg, Greg’s dad, and the robbers that tried to steal Lemon Brown’s treasure. In Kino's head there was a song now, clear and soft, and if he had been able to speak of it, he would have called it the Song of the Family” Kino’s very focused and happy with his family, so naturally the Song of Family is a song he regularly hears. Another of example of how Kino was a good man at the beginning of The Pearl is on page 26, "My son will read and open the books, and my son will write and will know writing. And my son will make numbers, and these things will make us free because he will know - he will know and through him we will know. " This shows how Kino did not only think for himself when he found the pearl, he thought of his people. He thought about using the pearl to break the barrier that kept his people…

John Steinbeck once wrote, “Strength and success; they are above morality, above criticism. It seems then, that it is not what you do, but how you do it and what you call it.” John Steinbeck seems to view criticism as a little bump in the road. He stands by his work no matter what other say and he encourages other writers to do so. Steinbeck’s themes frequently involve good vs. evil, connection to the land, family, integrity, corruption, and more.…
