Improved Essays
I never thought there would be a day that I could not play soccer again until April 14th, 2016. Ever since I was three, I lived with a ball at my feet and fell deeper and deeper in love with the sport. I played on 3 to 4 soccer teams at a time and dreamed of going on to play professionally when I got out of highschool. That all changed with one doctor’s appointment.
I had been experiencing pain in my hip so I went to Children’s Hospital to confirm that it was just a pulled muscle. “Hi Malcolm, I’m Coach Spear, and I’d like you to consider playing soccer at Davidson.” I had played the “beautiful” game of soccer for as long as I could remember, starting in an organized league at the age of three to be exact. An invitation to play as a team member in a highly regarded college soccer program was the culmination of hundreds of league games, dozens of travel tournaments, and too many practices to count. The idea of attending such a prestigious college and having the opportunity to continue to play soccer is a personal accomplishment was very exciting to me. Soccer may have opened a door, but I believe that several interests in addition to soccer, combined with the educational opportunities that Davidson has to offer, will help me open many doors throughout life, shaping a personal identity that will be unique among many.…

But in sixth grade our neighborhood was full of Latinos that loved soccer, so that is how I started to become more passionate about it. Our neighborhood did not have a nice field. It didn't have goals or markings, it was pretty much dirt and grass.…

The moment you decide that you want to play the game of football, your life changes forever. At least mine did from the first time I strapped on my pads. I think Vince Lombardi reflected the essence of football in a small collection of words, “people who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.” The biggest part of the game is teamwork, a concept that I was introduced to early on, but we’ll get to that later. The first time I strapped on pads was in the hot August sun at 12 years old.…

Throughout my short life journey, soccer has been an enormous part of my life. I began playing soccer at a young age; this is the point in my life when I fell in love with the sport. As I jog around the field, following my teammate in front of me like a baby duck follows its mother, I prepare my mindset for the game. As a forward, I must be on top of my game so I can whiz around the defenders and launch the ball into the back of the net with a swoosh. Ever since I can remember, forward has always been my position, and I have always had an attacking mindset. Little did I know, the game today would completely change my mindset for the rest of my soccer career. I start the game as a forward, like usual.…

My left pointer finger got caught in a hole and we heard a loud pop. My mom rushed me to the emergency room to get x-rays. The x-ray technician told us that he has never seen anything like it before. He also said he thought that I jammed my finger, broke the bone in the hand connecting that finger, and that bone twisted all within the blink of an eye. The next week, I visited the sports medicine doctor at Children’s Mercy Kansas City and they gave me a cast for six weeks.…
