Personal Narrative: Finding Myself In A Diverse Team

Over the course of the past three years I've faced challenges socially, physically, and academically. Whether that be graduating early or interacting within a group I thought I had nothing in common with. Finding my purpose among others who didn’t share my same beliefs was a difficult task, such as at the gym. I began powerlifting in the fall of my freshman year and it has significantly shaped who I’ve become, but not without experiencing hardship. Being sore wasn’t my only issue, for finding myself within a diverse group was quite possibly the hardest task. The essence of being a part of a community of individuals was a valuable tool when on the road to success. I began to experience a richer understanding of what it means to be a team. The beauty of my weightroom is found within the various shades of ethnic backgrounds and cultures. In the eye of the gym, athletes are not poor nor well off. We are only mere silhouettes of what represent strong determined diverse individuals. Collaborating within a group that is so assorted can seem challenging at times due to others varied experiences. But what I found instead were funny talented young men and women with the same thirst to grow while also challenging themselves. I set aside my preconceived connotations to further allow myself to be apart of these other students lives. Instead of keeping to myself, due to me being intimidated, I took delight in interacting and participating. Opening up and being positively influenced by these individuals, easily helped me in other situations to collaborate better and understand that everyone else is just as nervous as I am.
