a. While the 37th president Richard Nixon was in office, the biggest scandal in America’s political history unfolded named the Watergate scandal. This scandal included wiretapping and a burglary that made many Americans lose faith in the government. Nixon never admitted to his involvement one hundred percent, but one can assume per his actions and evidence provided by “Deep Throat”, he was involved willingly.

a. What is Watergate?
i. Watergate is the name of one of the largest political scandal to date in the United States. Watergate involved a list of enemies that were Nixon’s adversaries that included two hundred liberal politicians, actors, and journalists. It also included many legal activities that were to help President Nixon win the 1972 reelection. This scandal included wiretapping, burglary, cover ups, sabotage, violations within campaign financing laws, and political opponents.

James McCord wrote a letter to Judge John Sirica, stating he wanted to disclose information of Watergate. In his letter he noted that witnesses at the trial committed perjury, and defendants were coerced to remain silent and plead guilty. He also stated that Dean and Magruder were involved in the break-in approved by Campaign Director John Mitchell.
f. White House Tapes
i. A former White House Official testified in July 1973 that President Nixon had indeed taped conversations in his office. Those tapes were subpoenaed by Prosecutor Alexander Cox, but Nixon refused any release. Although Nixon refused, Judge Sirica told Nixon he wanted to hear the tapes. Nixon fought Judge Sirica, saying a president could be excused from any order for subpoenas and that they he had executive privilege in deciding who could listen to the tapes. The tapes were altered before being submitted to the Judge, causing confusion.
