Eisenhower chose Nixon to be his running mate as the Vice President. After Nixon accept and started running alongside Eisenhower, then the New York Post gave a famous news report headlined Secret Nixon Fund: Secret Rich Men’s Trust Keeps Nixon in Style Far Beyond His Salary. In this headline they accused Richard Nixon of accepting money from campaign donors that were buying influence with Nixon. They accused him of having a secret fund that was stocked with cash for “personal expenses”, around $16,000. (Perlstein 36-37) So Nixon went on tv to talk to the nation and defend his name. He went on to say that the money was just for campaign expenses, and that no one received any special treatment. James McCord installed taps on two phones. He tested them and decided that they worked to his satisfaction. (Perlstein 666 - 667) However, James’s Satisfaction was not good enough because they had to go back in and fixed the bugs, because they were on too low and one did not work at all. So afterwards, McCord goes backs and tapes the locks of the Watergate Complex to break in later just as he previously did.
