Introduction
Circumcision is “surgical removal of foreskin of penis” (Pillitteri, 2014, p. 481). The procedure holds a deep spiritual significance in many religions. “Circumcision as a medical procedure arose in Britain and the United States in the late 19th century” (Canadian Paediatric Society, 2015). Circumcision not only holds health benefits, but reduces the risks that may cause potential harm to the child in the future and their sexual partners. Parents make the decision if they want their son to be circumcised or not. The complications that arise from male infant circumcision are bleeding, infection and formation of urethral fistula (Pillitteri, 2014). The complication “rate for newborn circumcision is between 0.2% to 3%” (Statham, 2012). There are many contraindications for circumcision for neonates. Such as, boys who are born premature, have history of bleeding disorder in the family and genital abnormalities are required not to be circumcised. Male infants who have family history of bleeding disorder “is at risk of excessive blood loss” (Statham, 2012). As well as, infants with genital abnormalities “skin prepuce may be needed for reconstruction surgery” (Statham, 2012). Newborns “should be checked frequently for evidence of swelling, oozing, excessive bleeding, and ability to void” (Potter & Perry, 2014, p.332). The circumcised area needs to remain sterile to prevent any infection. With proper care and supervision, the risks will reduce. Healing process of the circumcision usually takes up to 4-7 days which can be stressful for the baby and as well for the mother (Circumcision Edmonton, 2015). It matters on the parent’s choice if they want their child circumcised or not. As health care providers, we must provide unbiased information that would help the caregivers to make the correct decision. I believe allowing the parents to decide after giving them vital information about circumcision. If parents don’t want circumcision done with their infant, they must teach their child good hygiene practices for perineal area and safe sex education. Then it wouldn 't be necessary for the surgical procedure. There may be many benefits with circumcision such as, prevention of UTI, HIV, cancer and HPV. We also have to consider that there are risks and complications as well. In my opinion it 's best letting the parents decide whether they want their son to be circumcised even if it 's not for religious practices. It allows them to learn the health benefits and potential risks. The benefits outweigh the risks and also, the risks don’t last for long if proper care is given.
