Reflection Paper: A Career As A Social Worker

I chose to visit Denver CARES because even though I work there, I believe in what we do and the population that we serve. We serve mostly homeless individuals with addiction to drugs or alcohol. I hope to work with the population after graduation. Denver CARES is the first line of defense for helping these individuals. We take care of the clients and help them to detox in a safe environment providing medication as necessary to reduce the chance of medical side effects on the clients. This organization is very relevant to my future clients. I am in school because of my experience with this organization and the people we help. Meaning that most clients are homeless and live on the streets of Denver. The culture is very difficult for the clients to survive. The therapists need to understand the difficulties of living on the street to be able to communicate and help our clients. Although, most counselors have not experienced homelessness, they are able to empathize with the issues of the clients. Below is my interview with a Social Worker at Denver CARES.
Why did you become a Social Worker?
First job in the field was an accident but I really liked the field. I reached a plateau in my career and realized that I needed a master’s degree. After some research, I decided that I wanted to go into Social Work because it is all encompassing and had more options.
Why did you choose to work with Substance Abuse?
Substance abuse is the most underfunded and misunderstood area of mental health. I wanted to learn more about why people became addicted to drugs and alcohol in order to create changes for the clients. I also have personal experience in the field.
