to be found in the conventional, civilized world. The scenes that take place outside the Zone are painted in a condemning light. The home of the Stalker, the building and town in which he resides that is slowly exposed to the viewer in the beginning portion of the film, is depicted as an empty, hopeless place. The incentive for this portrayal is the origin of this place’s ruin. While the Zone represents a more organic decay, demonstrative of the inevitable continuation of life, this place is the result of imposed hardship, an inorganic decay. The obvious poverty of the locale and the decrepit state of the buildings are reflective of a sense of falseness, as if the struggles of the inhabitants are man-made, subjects to a superfluous imposed deprivation. Perhaps the most obvious proof of this can be found in Tarkovsky’s use of color. While in these distressed surroundings the film is presented in a brown monochrome. It is only as the protagonists enter the Zone, a place subjected to a more organic form of decay, one that comes in the absence of human intervention, that color is introduced to the film. It is as if Tarkovsky is implying here that it is this second kind of decay in which beauty can be found. The first is unnecessary, lifeless even. An appreciation nearing reverence for this second, natural decay can be found everywhere one looks in the film.
