    names for the seismograph are seismometer, seismoscope, and the ancient Chinese name: Houfeng Didong Yi. Which means “ Instrument for measuring the seasonal winds and movements of the Earth ” . Over time, the seismograph was able to evolve from where it started to where it is now. Creation The ancient seismograph was invented in 132 AD, ancient China, during the Eastern Han Dynasty. The place where the seismograph was invented is in Luoyang, China. Luoyang, China on a map. The creator of the seismograph was an inventor named Zhang Heng. Not only was he an inventor, Zhang Heng had many other professions at the time. He was also a mathematician, astronomer, map-maker, painter, and poet. Besides the seismograph, there were many other things Zhang Heng created. Such as the water powered armillary sphere, improvement of the water clock, theories on astronomy, and much more. Out of all the things he created, his most famous is still the seismograph. Function & Design The first design of the seismograph was a urn-like copper instrument. On the surface of the seismograph are eight dragon heads that point to eight different directions: north, northwest, northeast, south, southwest, Ancient Chinese Seismograph southeast, east, and west.
