hospital because our momma had died! I was in shock, and not only was I in her house, but I was sleeping in her bed when I got the call. I cried all the way to the hospital. Once we got there, I was so nervous and shook up I did not want to see my mother dead but I knew I had too. Once we got the room number and proceeded in, I blanked out. My mother was cold and swollen; she was DEAD! I kept rubbing her arms as they were cold. It made things worse for me, no lie. They began telling us that the chapel was about to come pick up the body and at this point, I was just trying to catch my breath because I literally was out of breath. As we left the hospital, I began to listen to church music, especially a song called “I’m Going to be Ready” by Yolanda Adams. All I could say was this had been a weekend for me and I still had funeral arrangements to make. As the days and years pass by, I’m getting stronger day by day but there is not a day that passes that I don’t think and wish she was still here with me. Every year on Mother’s Day, I cannot stay in church; I eventually walk out crying. It’s a hard pill to swallow, especially when you’re young. It showed me how to grow up and take care of my responsibilities as a grown women. I tell all my friends that you get one mother, so you better cherish her and spend every moment you can with her because someday she will be gone, like mine.…

Once again, Salinger wasn’t oblivious to the meanings behind each character’s name. In fact, symbolism plays a part in the character Sybil Carpenter. “Sybil, bright with innocence but already tarnishing, symbolizes for Seymour the human condition: like the sibyls of old, she is the unconscious oracle through whom the prophecy is revealed, the instrument of truth” (Lane). A sibyl is defined as “a woman in ancient times supposed to utter the oracles and prophecies of a god” (“sibyl”). It is…

footprints, no boats, no people. We’re on an uninhabited island with no other people” (Golding, 30-31). Just like how the boys were the first on the island, Adam and Eve were the first people in the garden and on Earth. Before Adam and Eve were planted in the garden it was an untouched area where nothing could go wrong, but once Adam and Eve came, it no longer had its “untouched beauty”.
