The first trailer for “Logan,” with Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” serving as the soundtrack, catapulted “Logan” up my list of most anticipated movies of the year. I was already looking forward to it, of course, but that trailer moved up it to my fourth most anticipated movie of the year. At Xavier’s urging, Logan and the aging Xavier, who has Alzheimer’s, set up to help Laura reach a safe haven at the other end of the country. Given that this is known to be Jackman and Stewart’s final…

In the dictionary, the word responsibility is defined as “The state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone” (“English Oxford” 1). From a young age, every person must accept responsibility for decisions that he or she makes. As situations arise that must be dealt with, people have a duty to deal with those situations. In many ways, the act of living itself is an act of ultimate responsibility. In Robert Penn Warren’s classic novel, All the King’s Men,…

For thousands of years, men have desired to gain power over others so that they can accomplish their own goals. Thus, it has become human nature to desire power and control. Most often men would try to gain as much power they could possibly have by bending the rules or laws that have been put in place that would restrict them. If the rules and laws that kept the amount of power in balance were suddenly removed, the men would be the first to realize it. Their methods for obtaining more power…

While the earlier works of the X-Men comics represent racism in society through the mutants, the more recent stories of the X-Men chronicles have largely shifted the mutant metaphor, focusing more on discrimination pertaining to individual’s sexuality (Darowski, 166). Shifting this metaphor from racial discrimination to sexual preferences as a rhetorical device, keeps the tittle relevant as time goes on (167). Coincidently or not, the X-Men, which work as an allegory to the LGBT community,…

In a tale of love and despair, the use of archetypes in “Beauty and the Beast”, written in 1756, helps to portray the theme and enables it to be applicable to real life. The tale is about a beautiful woman named Beauty who is forced to live with a Beast and eventually learns to see past his appearance and learn to love him. Interview with former “abandoned” Kids Jack: Where do you live? Why? I live in London, because it’s nothing like that horrid island with death all over it. Plus, it’s where my job is. If you don’t mind me asking, what is your job? I’m the manager of Merridew Butchering Factory. When I was in that island 16 years ago, I was butchering pigs. I only did that because my father was a butcher and I wanted to be just like him. It’s a family business. (pauses) In that island I wanted to provide for…

Logan is a 2017 Marvel comic-adaptation that strips away the conventional superhero film characteristics, the twists and turns of the X-Men franchise, to revolve around one of Marvel’s most famous superhero, Wolverine. Flawlessly merging both Marvel and Western mythology, director James Mangold has created an emotionally and symbolically significant element, one that focuses on Hugh Jackman’s adaptation of a declining and shriveled hero. The dystopian film, set in 2029, is incredibly desolate,…
