    knew he wanted to shine like him. But he was merely a shadow, always several steps behind the other. Bartholomew kept pulling at the string he was given, waiting for the day he would catch up. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months turned into years. Their friendship had blossomed into a vibrant flower, embedding its roots in the ground. Everyone in the dusty town they shared recognized the duo and knew that if you saw one, the other would not be far behind. They were the best of friends, partners, and above all brothers. On one day, this pair made a fateful promise. “Hey, Barty! Let’s make a vow.” Aldous looked intently at the other who still did not fully understand. “I promise that one of us shall become the strongest man upon the earth!” The vibrancy in his eyes made Bartholomew feel as though he really would do it. He was proposing a race in which they would stand upon equal grounds, struggling to reach the top. And yet, why was it that he felt inferior? How much weight does a simple promise carry? Bartholomew continued following the string, wrapping it around his palms desperate to compete with the other. Both boys took up the art of sword fighting, having friendly sparring matches with each other. Aldous was a natural, easily learning techniques involving the way of the warrior.
