Although subject matter, content, and context within an artwork are used to express the artist’s emotions, the aforementioned elements provide a means for the artist to highlight issues they deem important. By directing subject matter, content and context towards these issues, artists are becoming activists of social change. In Kara Walker’s installation Gone: An Historical Romance of a Civil War as It Occurred b’tween the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart, Kara uses cutouts of black paper pasted to a round, white wall. The inspiration for the piece was the book Gone with the Wind, which the artist described as “engrossing yet grotesque” (Walker). The aforementioned description of the book directly represents the silhouettes within the installation. The work draws in viewers with its beautiful simplicity, yet upon closer inspection, it depicts the horrific maltreatment of African American slaves. Gone is a historical reference to the injustices of previous generations of African Americans, while also serving as a means to highlight the continued social inequalities that remain prevalent in today’s society.
