William Westmoreland is better known by his service during the Vietnam War, but prior to the Vietnam War he began to establish himself as a commander in both World War II and the Korean War. William Westmoreland cut his teeth as a Lieutenant during World War II seeing combat in the North Africa theater and then in the invasion of Italy. Westmoreland quickly reached the position of Chief of Staff for the 9th Infantry Division. After World War II Westmoreland continued to move up in the ranks and obtain the rank of Major in 1948, two years before the break out of the Korean War.
