Josey’s shadowed entrance’s putting an end to the rape taking place in the trading post represents his role as the dark angel of justice (Class). Josey’s ending the rape also illustrates his reconnection with his anima, which was lost when his wife was raped and murdered. Furthermore, Josey’s interest in buying a horse alludes to the beginning of a new cycle, in which Moonlight joins Wales and Lone Watie. In the final scene of the film, Josey is seen confronting his former captain before mounting his horse and riding off into the sunrise. As Wales faces Bloody Bill Anderson, Anderson notices the blood on Josey’s boot. Blood is symbolic of life, sacrifice, and, since red is the color of the setting sun, the end of a cycle (Cirlot 29). Thus, the dripping of the blood onto Josey’s boot represents the end of the struggle and the sacrifice that Josey made. The confrontation between the two former Bushwhackers also demonstrates that the two are equal and, thus, the cycle is complete (Class).
