He was born in San Francisco, to millionaire mining engineer, goldmine owner and U.S. senator (from 1886–91) George Hearst and his wife Phoebe Apperson Hearst. Phoebe Apperson was the first woman advisor of University of California, Berkeley. She funded many anthropological expeditions and founded the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology.
