“Ship of Gold In the Deep Blue Sea” by Gary Kinder is a book about the search for the SS Central America; a steamship that carried hundreds of passengers and an estimated $2,000,000 in gold (which is $292,000,000 in modern day value) in 1857 that was trying to reach New York from Panama which later went down in a hurricane. Tommy Thompson later sets out to discover the riches of the lost vessel on a quest that people had thought was near impossible to plan. While Thompson had found the ship and about $8,000,000 of the gold that was on it, he later found himself in trouble with having so much attention on him for his discovery and had trouble with having so much power. Thompson’s discovery of the SS Central America later led to the demise of his reputation and himself. Tommy Thompson had a bright mind. He says on pages 90-91: “‘I wanted to be an inventor,’ he said, ‘but there’s no college training for that. As close as I could get was the mechanical engineering school.’” While it isn’t surprising that he went on to do great things with his life, like discovering shipwrecks and using the most advanced technology to be able to locate the SS Central America while the vessel was 8,000 feet underwater. Though during 2014, Thompson underwent some struggles and actually got arrested for stealing investors’ money after the ship was found.
