They met once they were about 14, Erna met her at her moms’ sewing workshop, Rosa learned the trade of sewing really fast. Erna said that they were sitting talking before the war had erupted. They would only see people walking around that they have not seen.The Russians arrived to Czernowitz 1940; Erna said that the disaster started when the Romanians put up posters saying “Ghetto in October” in 1941, so that is when everyone left their homes in October. They stayed in the ghetto of Czernowitz for three weeks, after that they were sent to the camps in Transnitria for three years where they suffered of poverty, hunger andfear of the future. From six in the morning to six in the afternoon they had to be in the ghetto, the ones who got there late were punished. The Ghetto was a place where people would stay temporarily until they went to a concentration camp in Transnitria , which was under Romanian control. In October 1941 they were given some instructions about evacuating the camps, each street had a different place to go to, if they did not want to get deported they would have to evacuate. Erna’s aunt, uncle and their son evacuated before Erna and her family did so they just had to wait until it was their streets turn to evacuate. During the camps they would starve so Erna’s mom would have to boil milk for them, that is all they had to eat.…
