Then another problem arises for journalists that do wish to pursue their given duty as government watchdogs; access to information. We would like to think that press conferences are held fairly and honestly. Yet it is greatly reassuring to a politician that when you call on a reporter for a question, you get a question whose answer you already know. And that’s how many press conferences are ran. However, when a journalist asks a serious, controversial question that might result in an increase of negative views towards a politician, there is a high probability that that journalist will not be invited to any more press conferences again. No access, no information. No information, no reportings.No reportings, no job. Even the venerable “first lady of the press” Helen A. Thomas was subjected to this silent threat to her bountiful career when she interjected President George W. Bush’s White House Press Secretary, Dana Perino, after asking about the redeployment of US troops to Iraq. Perino took great offense to her interjection and responded, “Helen, I find it really unfortunate that you use your front row position, bestowed upon you by your colleagues, to make such statements.
