    Charles Lane Analysis

    • 4 Pages

Charles Lane, in his weekly column from the The Washington Post, consistently uses facts and figure, a concerned tone, and a cause and effect expository mode in order to convey his argument about a current issue. However, he uses varying levels of sophistication in the three articles “The GOP’s health-care plan goes in the exact wrong direction,” “Who is to blame for the opioid epidemic,” and “Rahm Emanuel gears up for a modern day- Brown v. Board.” Lane supports each of his arguments with ample quantitative facts and figures. In his March 22nd column on the misdirection of the GOP’s proposed healthcare plan, he uses relevant statistics about who uses medicare. To support his claim that there is little to be gained by linking Medicaid with employment, he asserts that “The vast majority of Medicaid beneficiaries —77 percent in 2015...— are in households with a worker already” (“The GOP’s”). This statistic makes it clear that such action would help only minimally in making Medicaid more cost effective. In his March 29th article, in which he identifies the entities responsible for the opioid epidemic, he illustrates how widespread the issue is using statistics. He claims that between 1999 and 2015, “183,000 deaths [were] related to prescription opioid overdoses” (“Who is to blame”). This quote is placed near the beginning of the opinion editorial; it sets up the argument by identifying why this is an important issue. In his April 5th article, about a modern court case regarding…

international issue where General Shelton challenged a process concerned a situation in which the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld wanted to deliberately place an American plane in harm’s way in Iraq that could have resulted in the death of Air Force Personnel. This deliberate act would have resulted in a false justification for attacking Iraq. General Shelton’s outspokenness may have been perceived by Donald Rumsfeld as insubordination, but General Shelton demonstrated integrity and…

Women oppression has had such a big influence on women that at one point in history, they were not even allowed to help defend their country because they were seen as “weak.” They were only allowed to cater towards the men who were fighting. Eventually, women in America got tired of being treated as inferior human beings. Women’s roles in the military have changed immensely throughout history, and the transitions women have made has greatly impacted militaries everywhere. Before women were…

significant breaches in their character as shown in the recent guilty plea of Gen James Cartwight, retired Marine and former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to federal charges of lying to the FBI and leaking classified material to his mistress. Recent trends in conduct and the lack in strength of character has left our profession and all public servants in the Department of Defense exposed to sarcastic one-liners, judgments, and ridicule. All of this has gone a long way to undermine…

The Goldwater-Nichols reduced each branch’s service chief to an advisory role while strengthening the position of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It also streamlined the chain of command between Combatant Commanders, four-star generals in charge of geographic or functional operations, so that these commanders reported directly to the Secretary of Defense and the President. The most significant change wrought by Goldwater-Nichols for collaboration purposes is the act’s legal…

this article you realize that both political parties are at the table with a formal setting (suits, wine, napkins tucked in shirt collar, ect). The Republican elephant (left) is holding a menu with new candidates that have little to no experience in the white house. While the Democratic donkey (right) is thinking “leftovers…” as it holds a fork and knife while looking at an old and wrinkly Hillary Clinton that is curled in a ball on a plate in the middle of the table. I personally think…

ours after Donald Trump’s Inauguration, a post appeared on the official White House petitions page, demanding that he release his tax returns. In only a few days, it gathered more signatures than any previous White House petition. The success of the Women’s March had shown that themed protests could both mobilize huge numbers of people and hit a nerve with the President. On Easter weekend, roughly a hundred and twenty thousand people protested in two hundred cities, calling for him to release…

My knowledge level of Theodore Roosevelt was pretty low. I guess you can say I knew the basics like how he was President of the United States, has his face sculpted on Mt. Rushmore, and that his face is on the American dime. I had no idea of how great of a president he had been. I was impressed on how he invited Booker T. Washington into the White House early in his presidency. He did it because in his mind it was the right thing to do. With the end of the Civil War having only been 30 or so…

in 1913. They were trying to wake not only politicians, but other women to how important suffrage was for women of all walks of life. Unfortunately what started off as a calm event to raise awareness and funds turned to violence. Although there was violence due to the unwilling ness of the police to protect and the anger of some citizens it did gain new sympathies that would work in its favor. Alike the movie Inez Milholland did in fact ride the white horse at the beginning of the parade. 3Mrs.…
