Stay away from writing and reading.” Mammy knows what happens if you do learn how to read or write and what they’ll do to you so by this she is very frightened for Sarny if she would get caught doing what she was doing. Another example takes place on page 53-54 when Mammy catches John teaching Sarny letters. It states, “What are you doing to this girl?...... Don’t you know what they do to her if they find her trying to read? We already got one girl tore to pieces from the whip and the dogs. We don’t need two….Child, they’ll cut your thumbs off if you learn to read. They’ll whip you until your back looks knitted- until it looks like his back.” By quoting this it tells me that Mammy is very scared and kind of nervous to learn how to read because of what Waller will do to you if he finds out you’ve been reading. All of the dialogue that Mammy says proves that by knowing of what Waller will do to you if he finds out you’ve been reading, they know not to learn anything on reading or writing. Then the maser whipped her his ownself with a rawhide whip cut…
