quality control and reliability processes of the manufacturers. It then interested us to research hard drive models and see which ones are the most reliable. We began our investigation with extensive research. In the early 50’s, a need for cheap, accessible, and rapid random data storage was identified by engineers at IBM’s San Jose laboratory. A few years later, after considering multiple approaches to solve the problem, IBM created the hard drive. Then, in 1956 IBM began the first commercial usage of the hard disk drive when the company unveiled the IBM 305 RAMAC, which laid the foundation for hard drive development for years to come. This hard disk drive (HDD), fixed disk, or hard drive is a storage device used to store and retrieve digital data. Initially created as large, cumbersome, and low capacity devices, the hard drives evolved to smaller and smaller sizes. More surprising than the size decrease, hard drive data capacities have significantly increased over the years of its invention. For instance, hard drive diameters have decreased from 24 inches down to 2.5 inches, and hard drive capacity has increased from 3.75 megabytes in the mid 50’s to more than 10000 gigabytes today. Hard drives are able to accomplish this feat with the help of rotating platters and magnetic actuator arms paired with magnetic heads. These magnetic arms read/write data on the hard drive by randomly accessing the data. Thanks to these benefits, the hard drive is by far one of the…
