The crime the two men became charged was the robbery and murder of Frederick Parameter, a payroll clerk, and security guard Alessandro Berardelli. The two supposedly took $15,000 in cash the night of April 15, 1920. The court case was fueled by racism and hate, “Their trial aroused intense controversy because it was widely believed that the evidence against the men was flimsy, and that they were being prosecuted for their immigrant background and their radical political beliefs.” The judge during the case, Judge Thayer, stated, “Did you see what I did with those anarchistic bastards the other day? I guess that will hold them for a while,” after he denied the two men another trial. On August 23, 1927 Sacco and Vanzetti were put to death by the electric chair, and the United States was yet again able to dictate the lives of people who were different than “good Americans.” The Great Depression was new to the people of the United States during the 1930s, but one constant remained true through this era, racism.
