While glancing at comic book covers and inside the comic, it can give one a lot of insight as to what the comic book is about and the authors and or publishing companies’ values. It can be as simple as whether it is more cartoonist or realistic, colorful or dull, filled with lots of word bubbles or majority just art. It also can be more complex, such as the presence of females or African-Americans and how each is portrayed in comics. With the use of certain images and the style of art and character images, the comic Princeless illustrates that it is standing up and going against social norms of not only comic books, but as well as in real life. The writer of the comic Indie comic book Princeless, Jeremy Whitley, has some very interesting intakes and broad experiences which allowed him to create the surrounding images of equal rights to everyone, no matter what gender, race, or interest one has. Whitley used a fair amount of lived experiences to drive his characters and their feelings. An example is with Prince Devin, a male character whose main interest is reading poetry instead of sword fighting with other boys his age. He is depicted as an average sized teenager who is always holding a book or poetry. He was a disappointment in his father's eye’s just as Whitley felt like while growing up. Whitley grew up in the south where most fathers pushed their sons to play sports, and when he told his father that he wanted to become a comic book writer, his father was not pleased,…

When it comes to creating characters and story, Alexander-Tanner explained that his biggest incentive is real life situations and scenarios. “I like talking to people, a lot. Like getting really connected. Making comics is very solitary work which I don’t like”, Alexander-Tanner states. “I’m not a type of person who wants to just sit in a room and not interact with anyone for hundreds of hours. It just goes against my nature which has been a big struggle in this work. So I really like the parts…

It was a fine day, raining and cloudy. At least that's what classifies as a fine day for John Cena, because he has autism. "I am all happy today standing here, john cena said" said John Cena. Suddenly, out of the nearby bushes jumped ChrisChan. He had always wanted to make friends with someone else with autism (although at this point he just wants any friend cause he has none) and he found out on wikipedia that John Cena has autism, so between illustrating and writing his sonic webcomic,…

scrapped later on. Once I entered high school, I wrote more about fantasy than romance. I wrote about children in a magical high school, princes that fled their castle, and a rebel helping a prince find his long lost twin. Eventually, I gave up on these stories and have not returned to them in a while. I did not consider myself a good writer, so I stopped writing altogether. I began to draw when I was in high school, which took up my reading time. I never went to the library for books since it…

Teachers loved calling me a contrarian when I was younger. Back then, I loved to argue with people. I needed my opinions to be acknowledged and my ten-year-old voice to be heard, so it didn’t matter to me what exactly my opinions were, and what my voice was saying. As I’ve grown up, I’ve formed my own original opinions and ideas to share. However, arguing isn’t always effective, and my persuasion skills are far from perfect. I still wanted to make my voice heard and persuade people to see my…

Unfortunately I did not begin the large stack I seemed to always have, but instead began reading web comics. It seemed less stressful than opening a book, since my anxiety was pretty severe at that time. Reading webcomics made me excited and inspired again— finding small creators with such beautiful comics was invigorating. I loved to see the formatting and especially the art styles. Looking at such unique styles portraying more complex posing and backgrounds really made me want to work on my…

In this revision of my micro essay, “Gender, Sexuality, and Sports in Check, Please!,” I will focus on the idea of being queer in sports, namely hockey, and how masculinity and sports culture in the webcomic’s world affect these characters (in this case, Jack Zimmermann and Eric Bittle). In order to support this idea, I will be using several of the comics, ranging from year one to the most current update, and analyzing certain aspects of them in depth. This would differ from my original essay,…
