The Taliban seized control of Kandahar, southern Afghanistan, in 1994. The most important milestone in Taliban history was when Mullah Muhammad Omar wore the sacred cloak of Prophet Muhammad amongst a public gathering, where he declared himself the Leader of the Faith (Afsar, 2008). The event was where Omar claimed his right to lead all Muslims (Afsar, 2008). The group made military progress where the controlled 95% of Afghanistan by 1997. Despite the numbers, the group’s support gradually declined due to their strict interpretation and enforcement of the extremist version of Islamic Law (Afsar, 2008). Mullah Omar had interactions with Osama bin- Laden of the terror group Al-Qaeda, and the Taliban hosted training camps and leaders under their controlled territories (Afsar, 2008). After the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, Omar refused to extradite Bin-Laden, and in response triggered Operation Enduring Freedom which led to the collapse of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda both in Afghanistan (Afsar, 2008). The fighters melted into society and the leaders went underground. They later emerged as the core of an insurgency in Pakistan (Afsar, 2008). The group formerly known as the Taliban ceased to exist.
