believes that the mass accumulation of ads in this movement is changing public consciousness. This is important to understand, because the altering of public consciousness shows a deeper cultural impact of ads, rather than their intended purpose of promotion and consumer purchase. As a consequence, this impact on public perception, consciousness, and socialization, as mentioned above, directly affects our public opinion. The idea of one’s public opinion was first brought to light in class while reading Walter Lippman’s idea on this topic in his 1922 book, Public Opinion. However, a quote within the book underscores a consequence of this vast spread of advertising. Lippmann says, “For the most part we do not first see, and then define, we define first and then see. This idea is important to understand, because perceptions are greatly affected by what someone first sees. If someone first sees a world dominated by advertising and public relation ploys, it works to give them a sense that this is normal. This directly alters the public’s perceptions. These altered public perceptions lead to a biased public opinion, which serves as a main ideological consequence of this outbreak in advertising and public relation material. Building off of this…

The effect of stepping back in time is also demonstrated through the differences between the novel’s two romantic love interests. Rose is introduced by her full title of “Miss Rose Bradwardine” (Scott 41) whereas Flora is “The Chieftain’s Sister” equating her to the old highland traditions. Time is malleable and something Waverley moves backwards and forwards through; this equates with the narrator of the novel and Scott himself, describing class issues and political rebellions and fights for…

“The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” by Christopher Marlowe and “The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd” by Sir Walter Ralegh express ideas on love and time. However, Sir Walter Ralegh approaches the concept more realistically by using the nymph’s outlook on these topics, while Marlowe describes them in a more a dream like state through the shepherd’s view. Through the carpe diem theme, Marlowe conveys the shepherd’s views of love and time, whereas Ralegh more practical and naturally articulates the…

His offers may seem to be beyond what a shepherd can normally reach for, due to his status. However, the shepherd creates a contract for the…
