This is important to understand, because the altering of public consciousness shows a deeper cultural impact of ads, rather than their intended purpose of promotion and consumer purchase. As a consequence, this impact on public perception, consciousness, and socialization, as mentioned above, directly affects our public opinion. The idea of one’s public opinion was first brought to light in class while reading Walter Lippman’s idea on this topic in his 1922 book, Public Opinion. However, a quote within the book underscores a consequence of this vast spread of advertising. Lippmann says, “For the most part we do not first see, and then define, we define first and then see. In the great blooming, buzzing confusion of the outer world we pick out what our culture has already defined for us, and we tend to perceive that which we have picked out in the form stereotyped for us by our culture” (Lippmann, Chapter 6). This idea is important to understand, because perceptions are greatly affected by what someone first sees. If someone first sees a world dominated by advertising and public relation ploys, it works to give them a sense that this is normal. This directly alters the public’s perceptions.
