    Epilogue Digging through the wreckage of the Nystroms’ house took many days. Several volunteers came to help, for which Martha was grateful. Still, the project lasted much longer than she’d hoped. She wanted to find him as quickly as possible. The house had caught on fire late in the evening, and the blaze had spread rapidly. Calling for Ella, Martha had hurried out immediately and called the fire department, but she never saw her daughter emerge. When the firemen arrived and there had still been no sign of Ella, Martha feared she would never see her daughter alive again. As she stood and watched with the neighbors, she hoped she had no need to worry, that her little girl would be all right. And then he showed up. While talking with Elaine, she hadn’t even considered he had come with her. He suddenly appeared from behind them, charging straight towards the house. Elaine called after him, and some neighbors shouted in surprise and fright, but he didn’t stop. Entering into the burning building, he disappeared from sight. Tension spread with each passing minute. Would he make it? Would he find her? Elaine expressed her concerns, saying Joseph had used up all his energy getting them there and couldn’t help. She couldn’t lose him again, not after he had just revealed to her his true identity. A crash sounded from Ella’s bedroom, her scream immediately following.
