Dracula. Vlad the Impaler is not Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula. Vlad III Drăculea, or Dracula in English, was the Voivode of Wallachia, the southern region of what is now Romania. He was born on November 14, 1431 in Sighișoara, Transylvania (“Vlad III the Impaler”). He was the son of Vlad II Dracul, another Voivode of Wallachia. Vlad had three reigns, his second being the one he is most well known for. He is hailed as a Romanian, Slavic, and Christian hero for keeping the Ottomans from spreading Islam further into Europe and defending Wallachia and the rest of modern Romania and parts of modern Bulgaria. He did, however, impale the bodies of Ottoman prisoners of war and displaying them outside of the capital city of Wallachia for the approaching Ottoman forces to see. His victims are estimated to be anywhere from 40,000 to 100,000 (“Vlad III the Impaler”). He died in battle in December of 1476 near Bucharest, Wallachia and his body was supposedly decapitated (“Vlad III the Impaler”). After death, he was given the name Vlad Țepeș,…
