The ports were also undergoing improvements and were vital to Auckland’s growth as coal that was shipped from overseas was used to power the trams. Auckland only grew further as the steam tramways (1910-1926/7) influenced growth more, spreading more people into suburban. Also the creation of ferry terminals meant other small settlements occurred over the water in areas such as Takapuna, Northcote and Birkenhead (Bloomfield, 1967). During this period known as the Victorian-Edwardian Growth (1871-1915) there was a lot of fast and rapid growth which included buildings, markets, commerce, the Auckland harbour bridge, railway stations, and more changes development occurred (Bloomfield, 1967) (Heritage Family History, 2015). In this same time period known as the other notable highlights included the change from horse tram to electric trams in 1900 which was set up by a private British company (Heritage Family History, 2015). The effects of this urbanisation due to transport and the ports meant that Auckland’s population grew from 57,616 to 133,712 by 1916 and so did the demand for public services (Bloomfield, 1967). The effects of having a transport meant more opportunities were created and this enabled further growth. In a way, this was a base foundation for greater development to come.
