It is the end of my junior year of high school, and I am so excited for my senior season of football to arrive. Once football season ended, all the way through the summer, I put all I had onto the field and in the weight room. I knew this next year was my year to prove to college scouts what I could do. Every day after practice I would go over to my girlfriend’s house to spend time with her. On April 18th, my life changed, I was blessed with a beautiful, brown-eyed, curly hair, and chunky baby girl. We named her Myricall Grace Hughes, but I like to call her by her nickname Fatty. After every visit with my girlfriend and our beautiful daughter, as I left her house she would say, “Put your seatbelt on.” She always had to remind me, because I would never put it on when I drove anywhere. I would always reply with, “don 't worry about me, I 'm a G.” It was September 11, 2013. Ring, Ring, Ring, the bell rings for school to end, as I was walking to the field house, I am asking every one of my teammates, “does it look like it 's going to rain to you?” praying that it pours down like Katrina, so that practice would get cancelled. I get into the locker room, put on my little white pants, huge shoulders pads, and a pair of football cleats that were so tight that my blisters were hurting. I then step on the field to line up for the team stretch. Whistle blows. “Go!” Coach Sears yells, as we run from the goal line to the 40 yard line. Just as we take off from the line, a loud thunder…

CHAPTER EIGHT Mystery is My Middle Name There was rock music blaring from somewhere inside The Tisalton Plastics, Glass, & Other Salvage Materials Yard. I could hear it clear as day as we coasted past the big new shiny sign then skidded to halt, dropping our bikes in front of Twist’s trailer. Seth and I inched toward the office through piles of parts and smashed cars missing back tires. “Evening, kids,” Eli, Twist’s slow-talking uncle grinned. His carrot-colored hair gleamed in the sun as…

With all the home projects completed upstairs, construction began on the two bedrooms in the basement that would house all five girls. Max and Hanna had to make numerous trips to the department and hardware stores to purchase home furnishings and building materials. On occasion, they took all seven children, making them wait in the car while they shopped. Other times, a sitter was hired to tend to this rambunctious bunch. Types of babysitters evolved as they grew older. One time, the babysitter…

Dangerous. Uncontrollable. Do not approach. These were the words that were plastered over the metal fence. Many heroic stories start with a protagonist, me in this case, and the protagonist is forced to go into danger to save the lives of others. I was about to jump over this fence to save a life, and that life was my own. The story starts on a Tuesday. There was nothing different about this day. I woke up to my parents arguing about the cereal. The sun was shining just like it did on Monday. I…

I thought this was supposed to be a hour ride and it's been four hours. It was the third day of summer and Ozzy had been placed on the bus that went to Lorenzo's summer camp for the troubled youth, their mother thinking it was the better option they had received in court. Ozzy wasn't a bad kid, he was just born into a bad neighborhood and coming from a single parent home didn't help the cause much either. It was three hours later when the two boys had arrived to shouting counselors who look like…

We were all incredibly bored and we were just sitting around not knowing what to do. Finally, being the five year olds we are, my friends and I decided to play “extreme” hide and seek together. We all went outside to establish the rules. The rules were not very descriptive, but basically we decided that we were going to play a different version of hide and seek, where everyone ran and then formed alliances or stayed on their own. Then, we had to try to find each other and “kill” the other with a…
