During that time, the young warrior assumed the role of a god, lavished in luxury and attractive women, until the day of his sacrifice when he would walk bravely up the alter. The Aztec priest commenced the somber ceremony delivering the message of the gods, killing the warrior by removing his heart. Astronomy in the Aztec culture was more cosmic than science. They observed nature and all its cycles, including the stars and the passing of the seasons, the birth and death of animals. The Aztec, like many other Mesoamerican cultures, depended on the number system, a vigesimal- based in the number twenty, because it is believed the number represents the number of fingers and toes of a person. To write the numbers the Aztecs generally used a system of dots and glyphs, (much like all other Mesoamerican Indians especially the Olmec). Numbers between 1 and 20 was represented by sequences of dots standing for numbers. For example, 9 dots stood for the number 9, and glyphs represented multiples of 20 which was represented by a flag, 400 by a feather. Even after the Aztec Empire was destroyed in 1522, their Nahuatl Language would become the “lingua franca” of Colonial México.
