Man’s Best Friend They say a dog is a man’s best friend. I can agree with that given that I had a four legged, furry friend. My golden retriever, Copper, was my best friend. He was always there for me when I needed someone to rant to, he never judged me, and he would continue to love me even after shouting at him. No other dog could ever compare to Copper. He was one of the world’s greatest dogs in addition to being a best friend. Ten years ago, my parents decided to get my brother, Grant, and me a puppy. We were a content family, but we knew something special was missing. From the very first time I laid my eyes on Copper, I knew he was going to be one unique dog. Copper had immense brown eyes, soft, furry paws, a tail that would always be wagging, and he would always have a smile on his face. He hated going through car washes, never liked when it stormed, and he wasn’t fond of the vacuum cleaner; he thought as if the vacuum cleaner would sweep him up. He loved taking pleasurable car rides with anyone. Copper wasn’t the average dog; he acted more like a human than individuals in this world do now. Copper would attend church with my family every Sunday in Elk Creek. He would always come to my softball games along with my parents, sitting out in right field. Everyone knew and heard of Copper. He was adored by many people as well as other animals. On June 1, 2016, we took Copper to the vet because he wasn’t feeling his lively, jovial self. I was anxiously waiting in the room…

As soon as my mom arrived we helped him to his feet and to the trailer. “I called Oak Ridge, they have a spot ready for him, we need to hurry.” We arrived at the equine hospital and eased him into the large metal building. The helplessness in his eyes had turned to fear. “He was laying down when we got to the barn this morning and he wasn’t acting normal,” She said as she struggled to keep Jazz calm. Knowing what it meant when horses laid down we knew something was definitely wrong. Hours…

From the moment we are born we interact with many different people and things that have influence over our lives. Most people are not much different from a fallen leaf that blows down the street in front of you: they reside in your presence for only a brief snapshot in time. The encounters are without meaning or consequence. Fortunately many of us have dearly loved people and companions in our lives that are too special to let them go. My sweet dog Katie was just such a creature. In many ways…

I stood in the kitchen doorway with my face red and my eyes puffy. It felt like part of me was gone and I couldn’t do anything except for cry into my mom’s shirt. All the memories flooded back into my head knowing that I had to hold onto them, because if I lost them it would be like losing her altogether. Champ barked a welcome to Storm as he walked out onto the porch. He bent down and rubbed the top of the mutt’s head with knuckles of his hand, the way he had seen Pete do it. He had warmed to his dad’s dog. Even if the mutt was liable to run off at a moment’s notice and end up in the dog pound. He wondered how much money Pete had paid to get Champ back every time the dogcatcher found him wandering the streets. Pete gave him a nod as he walked out of the garage. He paused by the old car…

She took heavy breaths as she rested her head on my lap. My eyes, swollen shut, had tears piling up on the floor looking like a flood. Her back, looking like a stick that a kid didn’t finish breaking, held her on the ground making her shriek in pain if she was to move. The vet slowly pushed the medicine into her vane letting her be relieved from the world. She was hit by a big white ford speeding around a school bus to beat the line of cars being stopped by it. The truck was to focused on…
