The crisis team agreed on having a few of us hold a large group meeting for the older classes in the cafeteria to explain what had happen and inform them that there were social workers, therapists, and nurses present to help. We counseled children experiencing anxiety in group and individual sessions. By noon, most of the children and staff seemed to be back into the routine of school. We were notified that 141 students were absent due to the fear of the bomb threat. The team was instructed to come back on Monday. After, returning we had a sessions with only a couple of children and one staff member who had a panic attack over the weekend. I was incredibly proud to be a part of such a dedicated and professional group. The work that they were doing to ensure the safety and well-being of the staff and children was quite humbling. In my opinion, taking the crisis intervention course at IRSC helped me to know exactly what to do and say to help the children work through their emotions. Being an intern at the school district, I was able to experience many positions. I was able to shadow a Student Support Specialist. One of the most rewarding moments was working with a child whose sister had run away. She had just moved to Florida and seemed disheveled, unorganized, and overwhelmed…

Fear is my biggest weakness. Fear of being out there, alone. It was one of those hot summer mornings; a gust of warm wind brushed against my skin. I was standing before an old rusty gate of my new high school waiting for someone. Ever since we moved to California, Lily, was the only friend I had. She had dark hazel eyes that bubbled with hazing richness and expensive taste. Her silky hair was a soft brown, like the bark of an oak tree, not dark but simply gentle in any light. I met her at a…

I could hear the waves crashing into one another. It also seemed like the game, Dominos. My family and I were crab hunting. We had seen some ghost crabs and sand fleas, which were very pale and white. Still to this day I can smell the ocean, salty and breezy. The smell of the ocean is really different than in Illinois. In Illinois, we have more of a farmland and dusty smell, not as fresh as the beach air. The first event my family and I decided to do was snorkeling at Destin Harbor. It was…
