From the time she was born to 1895, Virginia spent her summers at the Stephen’s Talland House in England, which to this day is still standing. The looks of the dramatic Porthminister Bay had a view of the Godrevy Lighthouse that inspired her to write. Her mother passed away in 1895, followed by her sister two years later. These events left her in a state of shock. She called it “the greatest disaster that could ever happen” (“The Life Story Of Virginia Woolf That Will Motivate”). Her mother’s death nearly killed Sir Leslie Stephen (Woolf’s father). His grieving was so intense, demonstrative, and so hyperbolic that it affected his children deeply (Virginia Woolf). Stella, (Virginia’s sister) had fallen into the role of mother since both Vanessa and Woolf were still young and since Sir Leslie was hopeless. She then lost her father in 1904, leaving her to lose her mental stability. She later revealed that she suffered sexual abuse by her two half-brothers. This added more to her trauma. In 1928, Woolf started taking a grassroots approach to inspire feminism as she started to address that women were not allowed to attend college. She was jealous of her two brothers because they were educated at Cambridge while all of the girls in her family were taught at home. Work, was a completely different spin on the original song; Harvey had a very “white” approach, while taking away all of the cultural elements of Rihanna’s original version. While this took away the unique factors of the song that Rihanna had implemented from the start, I did find it refreshing that Harvey was not trying to replicate Rihanna’s accent and song style.
