In terms of details of how the match was fought, Mendoza seemed more calculating as he was able to strike Humphries’ face until Humphries’ nose was “jelly and blood flowed from his cheeks.” The World reported that Humphries’ perseverance earned him applause from spectators. The only report that disliked boxing, overall, was the one featured in the Whitehall Evening Post. It described boxing as a “disgrace to the nation.” The paper was “stained” by the mention of a boxing match and blackguards were a dishonor to human nature.
