attacks occurred. Charles Barbuti, a friend of the officer, reported that Moira was spotted carrying people out of the burning World Trade Center buildings and then going back in on multiple occasions. It is said that she had the opportunity to leave, but she chose not to. Smith was putting her own life in danger while also having a family back home. Smith did in fact die on the scene, but she made the ultimate sacrifice that day to save as many people as she possibly could by her choice. She was later awarded for her actions with the New York City Police Department’s Medal or honor for her heroism. Tom Burnett was associated with the off site events of 9/11. Burnett was not a police officer, but a passenger on the hijacked plane United Airlines Flight 93. Burnett was in continuous communication with his wife over the phone explaining the hijacking and asking her to contact authorities. Rather than just accepting that fact that he was going to die, he decided to fight for his life and the lives around him. Burnett and a small group of other citizens decided to gain control of the plane. The plane eventually crashed in Pennsylvania and everyone on board was killed. Burnett took the risk of saving the…

Sandy Dahl, wife of the pilot of Flight 93 Jason Dahl, said, “If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.” I believe that this quote perfectly addresses the horror and loss that the terrorist attacks on 9/11 brought Americans. Sandy Dahl could have been angry, aggressive, or even belligerent following the 9/11 attacks, but instead Dahl very maturely used the events as a life lesson that helped her appreciate the lives we do have. She now…
