    “Unilateral hearing loss (UHL) means that hearing is normal in one ear but there is hearing loss in the other ear. The hearing loss can range from mild to very severe (ASHA).” Many children with unilateral hearing loss are identified at birth through newborn hearing screening programs. Early identification and intervention of hearing loss can slow down the progression or stop the hearing loss process. Early intervention is highly important for children who have unilateral hearing loss. Speech and language pathologist play an important role in evaluating and monitoring the children’s speech and language development. The speech and language pathologist may suggest speech therapy at home. Children can be evaluated for unilateral hearing loss by several tests. The most common test is a hearing test conducted by an audiologist. This test will check for factors affecting the middle ear. Children who are dealing with hearing loss should also see an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor. This is important because the ENT can examine the ear for wax and fluid in the middle ear that may contribute to hearing loss.…
