My tutorial process will be spent with a 3rd grade student attending Dunleith Elementary School, which is apart of the Marietta City School district. Dunleith’s demographics display majority of the student body being African-American students, and Hispanic being the second largest portion of the students. This school is located in a high poverty level area, resulting in more than half of the student body being eligible for free or reduced lunches. During this process I will be using a pseudonym of Billy to conceal my tutee’s identity. My tutee is a ten-year-old Hispanic male. Billy was retained in Kindergarten at Dunleith, which makes him the oldest student in my third grade classroom. Billy is a Hispanic student, however he is fluent in English…

This past October, I applied to be a tutor for both The Study and Student Athlete Support Services here at Loyola. As a tutor, I spend about 3-6 hours a week in The Study, located on the 3rd floor of Jenkins Hall, helping fellow students and student-athletes better understand their class material. However, The Study is also used as a workspace, utilized by Loyola students for individual studying, group projects, as well as tutoring sessions. Students that are together in The Study at the same…

The importance of research is critical pivotal in my discovery of what it has to offer and the significance it plays in higher education. Although I have completed one year in the doctoral program, I find myself questioning processes and approaches strategically, examining the quality of the data of new concepts Central Valley College puts into practice. I have found that educators have been defrauded by the same sales tactics found on infomercials where “you too can teach a child to read in as…

Growing up in my household, the motto was “contribution”. My mother would make my siblings and I help her with the cooking and the cleaning around the house. I use to be envious of my peers because they did nothing to help out in their household, but as I had begun to age, I realized it was a method to my mother’s madness. She taught me that everyone must work together to accomplish a goal no matter what the situation may be. I believe that is why I have always valued teamwork and enjoyed group…

A less comfortable path to explore is my weaknesses, yet I will press on. As silly as it may seem to an external eye, one of my major weaknesses in the first few weeks was that I doubted myself, the extent of my knowledge, and my ability to help my students. I felt somewhat out of place in my tutoring sessions considering the proximity in age and my lack of experience in tutoring reading comprehension and literacy skills. Within a few weeks, I realized that I had an academic knowledge base,…
