    At a young age, children are exposed to different environments which can ultimately affect their character. Where and who they live with might determine how one grows up. For example, Amy Tan was embarrassed of the lack of English her mother knew because of how people treated her. She faced discrimination since everyone taught she should’ve majored in Math and not in English or creative writing. Ben Carson encountered racism and self-doubt. When he was young he felt stupid compared to other students, while growing up his faith in himself was challenged. Prince Albert’s obstacles were maltreatment, ridicule, and stammer. Due to his not parents caring for him, his brother teasing him, and his nanny treating him wrong. Even though facing challenges growing up, they overcame their obstacles to fulfill greatness. In the short story, “Mother Tongue,” Amy Tan contemplates her past childhood experiences on how they affected her life and future education by holding her between two worlds, and at times, made her feel ashamed. Amy Tan grew up in a home with her Chinese mother who spoke limited English making it, difficult for many people to understand her. Yet Amy Tan found her voice as a writer by spending time with her mother even though she spoke “broken” English. Tan came to realize whenever she was with her mother, she spoke English differently, more simple, like her mother, but outside her home, Amy shifts to a more formal, acceptable English.
