I normally helped by providing care like pericare, assisting in ambulation to the restroom, turning patients, getting them food or blankets and, other similar tasks. The second night I had a patient with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder that had recently been diagnosed with sepsis, another patient presented to the emergency department with shortness of breath and palpitations and was diagnosed with mitral and tricuspid regurgitation and was awaiting her consult for open heart surgery, and my final patient had an order for discharge the following morning and was given resources for setting up hospice care at home. The patients I spent the most time with were the patient with mitral and tricuspid regurgitation and the patient who was being discharged to hospice care. A lot of my actions during both shifts were providing basic care and assessments. The woman with mitral and tricuspid regurgitation was Iraqi and spoke no english. She was my main priority on during the shift and I was assigned to perform all her assessments, charting, mediation administration, and all other aspects of her care. Caring for her gave me the opportunity to focus on and provide culturally sensitive care. She had certain preferences such as not wanting me to take her vitals while she was eating and she wanted to eat her own food from home.
