In "Fish Story" by Rick Bass, the element that I think that is an effective aspect of the story is the point of view element. The story is written from the first person point of view. The author, Rick Bass skillfully describes a fishing expedition in Texas in the 1960s when he was ten years old. Bass has a vivid imagination to describe the process of this story with such detail. One of his father's customers caught an eighty-six-pound catfish and since he was already in debt to Bass' father and…
around, scavenging for food. When we got to the beach our guide was waiting in his white colored boat, it was a fairly small boat but big enough to fit all of us. When we got in, I noticed a few stains here and there, but to have a great day I would have to make do. In the middle of the boat I noticed a container; I just figured this was either for the bait or the fish we caught. When we got in the boat, he took us to mosquito bay, the place we were at the night before. We were there…
Priscilla Lee's "Beneath the Surface" is a poem talk about the barracuda fish that is found in tropical oceans. This journal will take a look at this poem from an ecocriticism theory point of view. In "Beneath the Surface" nature plays a major role in the poem due to the fact it the landscape can be manipulated. The landscaped cannot be manipulated or change completely due to the fact the barracuda fish is the main character. The barracuda fish is a saltwater animal and needs a tropical…
“Grace under pressure” was shown by Santiago in The Old Man and The Sea. An individual who possesses the quality does not crack under the pressure of a sticky situation, but their best qualities show. When faced with a hard situation, he or she may show great knowledge, leadership qualities, physical or mental endurance, or even calmness. For these reasons, Santiago has grace under pressure. This example of a “Code Hero” characteristic, which was found on page 52, is my personal favorite. The…
Me and my grandpa were on our way to go fishing. On our way there we noticed the big dark gray clouds that were above us. We didn’t pay any attention to the because the weather man didn’t call for any rain. Finally we got to the dock where we could put the boat in, once we put the boat in we sailed off into the gulf of mexico until we found a good spot to fish. We stopped the boat and I could smell the pungent smell of the salt water, I grabbed my fishing pole and put some bait on it and casted…
While the goal of the goldfish lab was to teach the subject how to jump, this objective was unachieved, resulting in the inability to have our fish learn the trick. This outcome was most likely do to the minimal capacity in the brain of the goldfish, making it hard for the animal to remember how to perform the skill being taught. The fish only has a memory that lasts 3 seconds; however, the task took longer than 3 seconds to complete, resulting in the incapability of performing the jump. Also,…
The fourth and final theory that I will be explaining deals with worldwide climate change. Global climate change is a hot button issue for many political and special interest groups and some scientists believe that it may be at the root of the King Salmon’s disappearance. Despite its relative sensitivity, when compared to other theories about the salmon crisis, it is accepted by almost all that it is a happening. Regardless of what side of the political aisle you fall on, it is simply factual…
The Sea Lamprey is a dangerous and destructive fish for the great lakes ecosystem. This species feeds on a great lake fish and needs to be put under control in order to save fish populations in the great lakes and it needs to be stopped. One of the biggest problems with Sea Lamprey is that “Sea lamprey acts as parasitic and invasive species in each new habitat. It attacks and decreases the population of native fish and disturbs the natural balance of the ecosystem”(Softschools.com). An…
As I peered down the bluff, I saw the magnificent black-and-white beasts breach the water of the Salish Sea. The L-pod resident orcas were gliding past Henry Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. This sight reminded me why I was in the San Juans in the first place: to appreciate nature and do my part to protect it. I finally got to experience these natural beauties that I had heard oh-so-much about from the locals. The sea breeze flowed onto my face, and I appreciated the wonder of…
3 Bass Rigs You Really Ought to Learn! Many of today’s anglers all to often seem to have the enthusiasm to get themselves all sike’d up for that big day of fishing the following day only to find themselves coming in at the end of the day with only one or two bass caught. They will spend the day, usually casting, re-rigging, running, loosing lures, etc., but most of all getting frustrated because the fish aren’t cooperating. "Sound Familiar?" I, surly know this feeling and I’m sure that any…
