Unbroken is an inspiring story about a former Olympian, Louis Zamperini, who was enlisted in the United States Air Force during WWII. His plane crashed and he floated on the raft for 47 days until he was captured, along with his crew member Phil, and taken to a POW camp. By a miracle, the two lived to tell their inspiring story to the world. The novel Unbroken and the movie depict the same tragic story, however, scenes are portrayed in various ways. Although unquestionably similar, author Hillenbrand went into more depth about Louie’s running career/life before the war and did not show all of the struggles they had to endure to survive on the raft. The movie did not reveal that Louie had to physically battle the sharks when he hid under the raft from the firing plane. However, the novel went into immense detail about how Louie had to remain calm and strike the shark in the nose. This detail added to the suspense, and it showed just how resilient and fearless Louie was. Likewise, the movie left out how much the men struggled with catching fish. In the novel, the shark repeatedly ate the bait before they could catch fish. The men started to wonder if they would ever successfully catch fish. After trying various methods such as trying bait, minuscule and large hooks, and finally fastening the hooks to his fingers to make claws.
