claim is substantiated by Alastair Campbell, Downing Street Press Secretary (1997 – 2000), who wrote that Tony Blair “knew that in terms of the political substance, it didn’t mean that much. But as a symbol, as a vehicle to communicate change, and his determination to modernise the party, it was brilliant.” . However, we must consider the fact that Alastair Campbell, as a supporter of the Labour Party, would not have wanted to give the impression that Thatcher influenced New Labour. This is because one of Labour’s main regions of support was the North of England, which did not have a good relationship with the Thatcher government, due to the high concentration of mining communities in the region. Additionally, during the New Labour Government, the Bank of England was granted operational independence in 1997, and use of the Private Finance Initiative increased, as we will later discuss. This arguably negates Campbell’s claim that “in terms of the political substance, it didn’t mean that much”, as the actions of New Labour which followed, signified a departure from state centralisation. Labour’s use of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) provides further support to the claim that New Labour was influenced by Thatcher, as they had embraced similar policies to Thatcher such as the 1990 NHS and Community Care Act, which introduced competition into state healthcare. Likewise, the Blair government’s use of PFI introduced private sector funding into public services. Arguably, this…

This was a result of realising taxed money was just not enough for funding universities. Even after this flat-rate fee money was still short, Tony Blair proposed top up fees. Top up fees meant different universities could charge top up tuition fees in accordance to the level of funding needed for different courses. This proposal caused uproar and even protests and lead to Labour party making a new manifesto in 2001 going against the idea. Despite this many big changes were made to higher…

The question of Mr Blair ‘sidelining' cabinet was raised by Mo Mowlam in 2001 when she said after she resigned that "Cabinet government is dead" and "Tony's acting more like a president than a prime minister." Political commentators such as Nick Cohen have also said that the demise of the cabinet is already in effect. He describes cabinet meetings as "half an hour or less on a Thursday morning, when most of the real decisions are cut and dry before the meeting starts." Tony Blair is…

In the last century, this has been a re-occurring trait, with coalition governments being very rare. The 1940-45 coalition between the Conservatives, who had a parliamentary majority, with the Labour and Liberal parties, is one such exception, but this was largely due to the fact that Britain was at war. The only example of a deviation from a concentration of executive power in one party in the post-war era is the two minority Labour governments of the 1970s. Internal strife within the Labour…
