Toastmasters International (TI) is non-for-profit educational organization. It helps individuals from diverse backgrounds and specialties improve their leadership and communication skills. TI first club was founded in October, 1924 by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley - the director of education of Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) in Santa Ana, California, U.S. at that time. Dr. Smedley formed the first group of speakers there when he realized the pressing need of YMCA members to communicate, lead and work in committees more effectively and he wanted to help them learn these skills in a social enjoyable environment. He named the group “toastmasters” since this word referred to the person who gives toast at the end of a celebration or a joyful occasion…

All you need to know about public speaking When it comes to speaking in public, everybody almost feels the same way; it’s scary because you never know what’s going to happen, who’s going to be attending or how people are going to receive your speech. In other words, people are scared to speak to a crowd. And it’s not hard to understand why. Imagine that you’ve been assigned with selling a new cooking device for your first day at work. You’ve never done it before, and were only given 30 minutes…

I greatly appreciate taking this course with you Professor Skibba. What I have gained, knowledge wise, has improved my everyday resources. My original goals had the intention to become better in communication. In the first essay, I mentioned, for me it 's hard to grasp the minuet details in many arenas. This issue often led to unclear thoughts and to a lower self-esteem. Furthermore, realizing that as an apparent problem brought forth the need for a solution. Basic ways of learning wasn 't…

When giving speeches most of the time the person giving the speech is experiencing Communication apprehension. The definition of Communication apprehension is the level of fear, or anxiety, an individual faces when having to communicate with one or multiple people. I have dealt with Communication apprehension for quite a while now. Although it is not as bad, as it used to be. My freshman year of college, I was actually enrolled in the COMS 130 course, but my fear of public speaking, caused me to…

Speech 5 was no doubt the most difficult one. My topic was the importance of voting, in my speech I talked about how my oldest brother was into politics and how growing up he always emphasized the importance of voting to myself and my entire family as well. As my speech progressed I talked about how every vote matters and how, as crazy as it sounds Donald Trump could help draw a new audience to politics. I tried by best to show the audience just how important voting really was by giving them…

Persuasive Self-Assessment Throughout the semester I learned a lot about public speech and communication in general. At the beginning of the semester I was not sure what to expect from the class. I did not know where I stood as a public speaker but now after taking the class I can see a big difference in my communication skill. I feel a lot more confident now then at the beginning of the class. Looking back at my first speech, there were a lot to be learned. First, I did not have many sources on…

College begins and everyone is getting ready to return. The night before, my mind was going back and forth deciding whether I should take Public Speaking online or in campus. I decided to give it a try and take in campus. Maybe this way I could face my fear of speaking in public. Woke on a beautiful Monday August 22nd as I open my eyes I was staring at the ceiling with my heart raising as I become more awake knowing it was time. I get to the campus 40 minutes before class in a warm and humid…

Public Speaking in Action I have decided to write about my First Sergeant who will remain nameless. Since arriving at Al Udeid AB, I have had a lot of interaction with my Shirt. From one on one discussion to being a member in the audience that he is briefing, the interaction level has varied. In my opinion, he is a great public speaker and I do not have any major criticism thus far. However, nobody is perfect so I will be talking about his key strengths and weaknesses that I have noticed over…

While working on this speech, there were a few questions that came to my head. The first question that I was, “What kind of speech should I do?” This was my initial question because I wanted to speak on numerous topics such as a change in a proposition, reducing the cost of popcorn and drinks at the movie theatre (did not think this might have been a civil issue debate), etc. While doing my speech I had a few concerns that came to my head. The first concern was the way that my audience will…

Areas that I feel like I have improved in during this communications 101 course is becoming more confident in speaking in front of a small crowd, learning how to write speeches, and learning how to research and prepare for speeches. Everyone 's fear is public speaking. I avoided taking this class for the longest time just because I did not want to have to take a class where its entirety was just about speaking in front of people and doing a handful of speeches being my primary grade. I needed to…
