During the First Crusade, the Jewish people of the time suffered many violent attacks against them at the hands of the Roman Catholic Crusaders. The Anonymous of Mainz: A Hebrew Account of the First Crusade was written shortly after the end of the First Crusade, by an anonymous Jewish author. The author writes about the slaughter of the Jewish people by the crusaders primarily in the city of Mainz, but also in other cities in the Rhineland such as Speyer and Worms. Throughout the text, the…

The crusader uses his The Middle ages were an era of brutal power struggles that would form the modern world. The First Crusade was a Christian attempt at regaining Jerusalem, the Holy Land. It stemmed further than this, however. Pope Urban II had heard word that Christians were being persecuted in the Middle East, and the Byzantine Emperor, Alexius Comnenus, pleaded…
Throughout the course of history Religion has played a key role in the development of human culture. Specifically, in the Middle Ages Christianity had a huge impact on western civilization. Without religion it is apparent that in some ways western culture would have suffered, but the absence of religion would not have been entirely dreadful. Religion has been the cause of some of history’s most senseless violence and today this is still an issue. In the Middle Ages, Christianity in particular is…
After watching this documentary, I would say this was an accurate, short summary of the history of the Crusades. This film was written before 9/11 which is why it probably appears to be accurate and less bias compared to ones later produced. What’s conveniently nice about this film compared to others is that it solely focuses on the facts. We can see the actual history for what it is and nothing more. Islam and Christianity are revealed and there are no blind covers. The true nature is revealed…

At the behest of the Pope, Urban II, a large group of French nobles went to try to recapture Jerusalem. The…
After being conquered by the Crusaders, it is hard to think that the Muslims would be accepting of their new neighbors. Considering that they were not like-minded religiously and that there was still tension between the two groups, positive reviews of the Christians should be very little or obsolete. In a primary source from a Muslim named Usamah, it withholds experiences of how the Christians appeared to the recently conquered Muslims. He goes through several different experiences in which he…

Jerusalem is a very sacred ground for both Christians and Muslims, therefore it is important for all followers of these religions to visit at least once. The Christians before being banned, had to pay fees to get…
Within the Early Antiquity period, the Byzantine Empire developed the majestic capital known as Constantinople. Within the city lies one of the world’s most intriguing monuments known as Hagia Sophia. Hagia Sophia, which translates to holy wisdom in the Greek, was formed during the reign of Justinian and his co-emperor, Theodora. It has been immensely transformed over the past 1500 years from a Christian Church, to a Muslim Mosque, and then to a museum; all while surviving multiple…
