    America was highly dependent on raw materials. Railroads made the commodity of raw materials move faster than ever before since this was a booming industry it obviously had the attention of the government. Railroads during this era were able to unite the country and made more development of the country such as the west more possible. The development of the railroad system was so important that it became an important event in American history the opening of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869 was such an historic event that it was even compared to the Suez Canal in Egypt. A man that not only took charge of the transcontinental line, but also made his dreams possible of having a railroad across the Sierra Nevada this man was Theodore Dehone Judah of Central Pacific. During the time when the Central Pacific railroad was opened in June of 1861 the Central Pacific railroad could have almost collapsed but because of public funding it did not fail. President Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act on July 1, 1862; this act gave the Central Pacific to expand west from the Missouri river. Another interesting fact is that the Union Pacific already had 100$ million and also had a federal charter.
