The voice that emerged from the Harlem Renaissance and the mid 20th century was that of unapologetic self-assurance. These two sections in The Norton Anthology of African American Literature Vol. 2 are distinct because of their diversity not just in medium but ideas which fascinated me. I appreciate the new attitude of these writers, their criticisms and their exploration of genres and form. Above all I love the growing voice of women writers and feel especially connected to them. It was…
It was the theme song of the musical/opera of the same name. It had a fast tempo during the refrain melody, and the tempo during the verses slowed down. The dynamics of this piece were loud during the refrain, and soft during the verses. About halfway through the piece…
Ever since I was a little boy, I was surrounded by music, which gave me a chance to get to know many different music genres such as opera, classical music, pop, rock, and more. I have always been inspired by different styles of music, and the primary person responsible for that was my father. Although he passed away in November 28th of 2005, he lived long enough to transmit his experiences in the music industry and the positive way he perceived music. He was a very talented pianist who played…
Flute explores two contrasting themes: strength and weakness. Throughout the entire opera film, we witness both the afore mentioned themes from a variety of characters, and the fate to which these attributes lead each individual. Mozart’s beautifully written music backs up this intriguing storyline, with well-placed arias, leitmotifs and an excellent score. As the story follows the adventure of Tamino and Papegano, many times we witness acts of both the contrasting themes. Once Tamino has…
As can be seen in the above image, Koko utilises very few chords behind the melody line. This is due to the lack of instrumentation as well as the fact that Parker perhaps wanted the influence to be purely on the soloist, and so almost all of the music which can be heard from this piece is purely soloist with a drum accompaniment, except for the sort sections where Parker and Dizzy play together. When listening to the track ("Charlie Parker Discography". jazzdisco.org.) it is also evident that…
trombone substantiates its call to war despite its more romantic and lush sounds that do not necessarily surmise the qualities of a military work. The end of the solo trombone section concludes on a half cadence that follows reiteration of the main theme of B portion…
Have you ever heard a song that has impacted your life? Songs are a form of art that allows artists to express their feelings in a form of music. Songs can be interrupted in many ways; some songs have a more literal meaning, while other songs require you to interpret the lyrics to understand the deeper meaning. Artists often use figurative, metaphorical, and poetic elements in their songs to help develop the overall message. The use of figurative terms in a song leaves the interpretation of the…
31, Gerald Finzi utilizes downward bass motion, disagreeing key areas, and ambiguous cadences for the purpose of establishing a sense of wandering and despair. Much like other well-known British composers of mid-twentieth century, Gerald Finzi’s music takes advantage of dissonant and dense orchestration, as well as reflections upon political turmoil and personal ailment of the period. During World War II, Finzi became more prolific than ever. During the latter half of the war, he took in…
Since the introduction of art to society many millennia ago, the fine arts have been used to convey ideas, core values and themes to a captive audience. Whether that fine art is music, drama, visual art or any other medium, everyone around the globe lives and breathes art. Whether someone is a cinephile, enjoys Broadway, frequents museums, or listens to Bach in their car on the way to work, they all have one thing in common- they are learning and enjoying new concepts through a very powerful…
On the 26th of February I attended a trio concert at the Dr. Bobbie Bailey & Family Performance center. The concert consisted of three musicians including Charae Krueger (cello), Robert Henry (pianist), and John Warren (clarinet). I arrived at the Morgan Hall around 8 o’clock, which was the start time for the concert. As I began to approach the hall, I knew that I was in for a treat. The hall itself carried a sense of professionalism, but also almost a welcoming note that made me feel…
