To be a woman in the 25th Century world of Alfred Bester’s The Stars My Destination is to lead an inherently dangerous and confined existence. In it, jaunting–an act more or less equivalent to teleporting–has made women into something of a protected class in the face of the looming threat of sexual assault. Many, such as Jisbella McQueen and Olivia Presteign, express, in their own divergent ways, a dissatisfaction with this existence, and seek to either overtly or in secret defy its confines. There are, however, greater and more wide-reaching confines on womanhood ingrained not in the world of the novel itself, but in the framework which defines it: the monomyth. The monomyth, first defined by American mythologist and writer Joseph Campbell in The Hero with a Thousand Faces, is a narrative pattern, widely found in human myths, legends, and religious fables, in which the hero is “called to an adventure, crosses the threshold to an unknown world to endure tests and trials, and usually returns with a boon that benefits his fellows” (qtd. Palumbo 333). Closer examination of this model, which generally confines women to one or a blend of two roles: goddess or temptress, reveals exclusion of women not only from a wider degree of involvement in the narrative, including the central role of hero, but also from the degree of psychological complexity regularly afforded him. Consequently, for Jisbella and Olivia, their evolution as characters is within the confines of these predefined…
and I started my voyage from the Gentle Hub at Gunnovale to the Pleiades System. I figured that since this star system is widely known (maybe) in real life I would go there first to test the waters. I ran my pre-flight checklist, snacks...check, lemon ice tea...check...fuel scooper...check, spare space suit....check. I set four pips to engines two pips to systems, turned off shields and shield boosters and other non-essential modules and left on the good stuff. I had the map set for fastest…

TripAdvisor is one of the top-rated travel sites in the USA and the world. With destinations, all over the world and an easy to use website, it is no wonder that it has become a hit with most users. benefit a destination, however it can also bring dangers and limitations. When participating in ecotourism, travelers have a heavy understanding that they are responsible for their actions and behaviors. Travelers are also made fully aware of the impacts that their actions and behaviors may have on a destination. However, the main…
more superficial and could simply be a mundane destination such as Maui, Hawaii. Both Susan Orleans and Eric Wiener in their books, My Kind of Place and The Geography of Bliss expose what it means to be happy and if happiness is found or achieved. These works are similar in that they both follow two different adults on their expeditions around the globe. However, differences exist in terms of viewpoint and overall perception of the world. This is significant because one’s worldly view affects…
Determining which BSN products are dogs, question marks, stars, or cash cows allows strategic leadership to develop management plans for future growth of products and revenue. Specifically, the dogs, the products that are slowing the company down and will not improve the company growth, exist as the music business within the BSN stores. As technology has created downloadable music, selling tunes or music in the brick and mortar stores continues to dwindle. The market share, percentage…
It was mentioned earlier that the strong cultural pride would be enough to keep that from happening. Another possible reason could be because of what all happened with the US when they first cut their ties. That’s enough reason to not let them come in and take over again so they don’t end up with another economic downfall. There are not really any reasons as to why they would let the US run the destination and that’s why I don’t think that there could be a…

Disney World My dream vacation would be going to Disney World with my family. It would be special because my family would be with me. I would love going to Disney World because there are many fun things to do. Another thing that would make it special is seeing all the attractions that are only at Disney World. One of the best thing about going on vacation is having my wife and two daughters with me. Going on vacation without them is not fun because I would be missing the people I love most.…
classifies someone as being filled with wanderlust, I firmly believe that there is so much more to it than simply wanting to see a few destinations outside of your country. There is a fine line between wanting to see the world and wanting to experience it. Travel becomes so much more when you step outside of your comfort zone and try…
